Eyelid Bumps Q & A

What are eyelid bumps?

Eyelid bumps can form on your upper or lower eyelids. Many eyelid bumps are styes, inflamed oil glands on the edge of an eyelid that appear as red, swollen, pimple-looking, or tender raised areas. Other types of eyelid bumps include age-related xanthelasma, papillomas, inflammatory lesions, cysts, and eyelid cancers.

What are the symptoms of eyelid bumps?

Common signs and symptoms of eyelid bumps include:

  • Raised bumps
  • Gritty or scratchy sensations
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eye tearing
  • Eyelid tenderness

See Dr. William and her team if you have eyelid bumps that are painful, embarrassing, or don’t go away on their own after some time.

What are the risk factors for eyelid bumps?

While anyone can develop eyelid bumps, certain factors increase your risk of getting them. Examples include:

  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Eyelash follicle inflammation
  • Blocked oil glands
  • Eyelid bacterial growth
  • Family history of eyelid bumps

Ways to reduce the risk of eyelid bumps include washing your face and eyelids daily and protecting your eyelids from sun exposure whenever possible.

How does my doctor diagnose eyelid bumps?

To determine which type of eyelid bumps you have and develop a treatment plan, Dr. Williams evaluates your eyelids and reviews your medical history and symptoms. She may also recommend you undergo a skin biopsy or imaging procedure.

What are the treatments for eyelid bumps?

Depending on the type of eyelid bump you have and its severity, Dr. Williams may recommend one of the following treatments:

Home remedies

At home, you can apply a warm, wet cloth to your eyelids about four times daily. Let the stye drain on its own but don’t squeeze it, and avoid wearing eye makeup and contact lenses until the area heals.

Antibiotic ointments

Dr. Williams might prescribe antibiotic ointments for eyelid bumps to promote healing.

Dr. Williams uses sterile methods to drain the infected fluid from eyelid bumps, allowing them to heal and disappear over time.

In some cases, surgical removal of eyelid bumps is the best treatment – especially if other methods haven’t worked or you have eyelid cancer. Dr. Williams numbs the treatment area before removing each bump. In addition, you might use antibiotic eye drops before and after surgery to reduce the risk of infection.

If you experience eyelid bumps and would like them removed, book an appointment with Chicago Oculofacial Consultants by phone or schedule one online today.
